Recently I was contacted by a friend following the passing of her mother.  She asked about commissioning me to create two custom urns.  What an honor to be asked to do this!

I’m really enjoying the process of collaborating with customers on design.  It can be a lot of fun.

The potential order is for two urns: one will be for my friend and the other for her sister.  I’m a little nervous about this commission due to its significance.

For design inspiration, they gave me some photos of urns that they liked.  In addition, I did some research of my own about urns.  Did you know that an urn is supposed to have at least one cubic inch of area on the inside for every pound of body weight of the deceased?  It’s true.  That’s the formula.  I wonder, is there an app for that?

After gathering their preferences and doing my homework, these are some of the sketches that I created for them to review.  I also gave them approximate pricing information based on the sketches.  After they have some time to look these over, I hope to be able to talk through their preferences and settle on two final designs.

What do you think of the sketches?  What elements do you like or not like?  What about taking select elements of  the different sketches and coming up with a design all your own?
